Over twenty years have passed since I first interviewed at Wavetronix for the National Sales Manager position.  At that time, this was a real startup, with no product to sell, no customer to visit, no path-to-market established. However, there was energy, excitement, commitment, and dedication to what we knew we could do together.

The opportunities presented by Wavetronix afforded me a growth path that has benefitted me both professionally and personally. I tell people that this company is different from traditional companies. Traditional companies start with a mission statement that addresses value for owners and shareholders first; then they address the strength of their brand in their community; after that, they address the benefits to their employees and their families.

Wavetronix flips these traditional priorities in order to define who we are. Here, the individual and the family are valued first. If we do that, our brand will resonate in our community, which, in turn, is reflected in the value and growth to all stakeholders.

Twenty years on, that same energy still fills these buildings, bringing life and energy to the brick walls that house us as a family.  If you desire an experience like mine, and you are willing to work hard to achieve it, your potential is what Wavetronix is interested in growing.

The cool morning air rushes past me and the eastern mountain shadows recede as I ride into work on community trails and bike lanes.  Passing through a mix of neighborhoods, downtown shopping, and open fields, I listen to my favorite audio and consider the day’s work.  I pull into our campus, feeling amazed by the architecture, artwork, and gardens that make up our work home.  I walk inside and head upstairs, welcomed by old friends and new faces.

I turn on my computer and capture the most important things I need to achieve today. I visit with team members about family news and then settle in for the day’s work. At 9 o’clock, I head to my first meeting: a brainstorming and focus session in a large conference room with individuals from several teams.  We laugh and explore and debate, settling on a few promising paths forward.

At 10, I meet with my talent manager to discuss my learning goals and progress.  At 11, my team holds its weekly meeting to report on assignments, review key metrics, update critical projects, and then prioritize and discuss our needs.  At noon, I head downstairs with a few teammates to enjoy lunch prepared by our onsite culinary team. The rest of the afternoon is a similar mix of quiet, focused time and meetings.  I wrap up the day’s work reflecting on what went well and what I learned.

Soon after 5, I change back into my riding clothes, fill up my bottle with ice water, and head home.  It’s warm, but I enjoy the sunshine and the bustling communities I ride through.  I enjoy working at a place where both the business and my career are thriving.

My heartrate speeds up again. I’m home.

A friend once asked me, “Do you guys ever work at Wavetronix?”

It was a fair question. Aside from my actual job, "work" on any given day might involve spending the day cleaning up our Scofield property; or celebrating because the fundraiser I was in charge of reached 130 percent of goal; or laughing about the Coca Cola can that exploded in my car while I was picking up drinks for a team-building barbecue.

Yes, we work hard at Wavetronix. But work here isn't the 9 to 5 slog and daily monotonous routine that typified the post-college career experience of my parents. At Wavetronix, we get to do diverse and challenging things.  We get to collaborate with great people. We get to participate in personal development courses

(yes, we get paid for personal development!) and apply what we learn to our careers. And we get to experience a great sense of accomplishment, knowing that our work is contributing to something greater.

As an employee at Wavetronix, I enjoy:

Autonomy – I have the ability to make a difference, even in the smallest tasks. Notice things. Ask questions. At Wavetronix, you can talk to anyone. I’ve had great conversations with company executives who have later come to me to help them with a challenge they had. Those relationships and my personal ability to forge connections are a huge reason why working at Wavetronix is fulfilling for me.

Relatedness – What I do impacts other people and vice versa. Yes, it means delivering on assigned tasks on time, but it also means smiling and saying, "how are you?" At Wavetronix, we have the freedom to reach out and contribute in more ways than one, and this keeps me feeling challenged.

Competence – It's actually okay to not always know what you're doing at Wavetronix. Competence comes with time and experience, and you don't have to have either of them to fit in here. Just come with an open mind, a sense of humor and a desire to serve, and Wavetronix will give you opportunities to let your competency grow.
