The difference between SmartSensor HD’s true high definition radar and other radars is equivalent to the difference between today’s HD TVs and 1960’s era tube sets. SmartSensor HD operates at 245 MHz with five times the bandwidth of other sensors to produce clearer radar images for pinpoint accuracy. Sensors operating at lower bandwidths may not have the range resolution to accurately detect individual vehicles. HD’s greater resolution means each vehicle is detected clearly and cleanly.
It takes two to tango, or in this case, to detect accurate per vehicle speeds. Each SmartSensor HD has two high-definition radar beams. This revolutionary design brings with it a host of benefits: by timing how long it takes for a vehicle to go from one beam to the next, HD is able to replicate a speed trap for every lane on both sides of the highway, replacing at least two loops per lane; HD is also able to determine direction of travel, vital for applications such as reversible lanes and wrong-way detection.
One device is all you need. SmartSensor HD can see every lane on both sides of the highway; competitive devices often need two or more units to match a single HD. Our 65-degree beamwidth covers a 250-foot range at the minimum offset of six feet. Other radar sensors offer only 50-degree beamwidths, which are not sufficient for complete coverage at lower offsets. SmartSensor HD can detect traffic across 22 lanes, effectively replacing at least two loops per lane. As a result, HD can form the basis for any number of ITS applications, from basic counts to complex, proactive systems.
